Sips & Stories Online: Live From Rome is a virtual lecture series led by Dr. Megan Lorraine Debin, art historian and founder of Art Trippin’. Together, we’ll explore the dark side of Italian art history.
LECTURE 1
Beheadings and Betrayals: The Powerful Women of Baroque Art History brings to light the stories of women in Renaissance and Baroque Italy who boldly fought against oppressive systems to make careers for themselves as artists. Learn about women artists like Artemisia Gentileschi who defined the Baroque period, a 17th century court case which brought a rapist to justice, and the contemporary women artists who have picked up the torch. The lecture is approximately 1 hour long and will be followed by a Q&A.
Date: Saturday, October 10th
Time: 10 AM Pacific Time
Location: Zoom (link will be sent via email leading up to the event)
LECTURE 2
The Portrait of a Ghost: The Story of Beatrice Cenci uncovers the real-life story of a young noblewoman of the Renaissance who enacted revenge against her abusive father—and the injustice she suffered in the wake of it. Learn about the ways her legacy lives on through ghost stories, a play written by Percy B. Shelley, and a portrait that was wrongly attributed to a male artist. The lecture is approximately 1 hour long and will be followed by a Q&A.
